Fayetteville receives state waiver to allow school year to end June 6

Fayetteville Public Schools officials released a newly revised snow day make-up schedule to allow students to complete the school year four days earlier than expected.

According to a news release, the district received a waiver from the Arkansas Department of Education to allow schools on the traditional calendar to attend classes on Memorial Day (Monday, May 26). By using Memorial Day and going to school on Saturday, May 3, traditional calendar students can finish the school year on Friday, June 6, instead of Tuesday, June 10 as long as no more days are missed due to inclement weather.

Asbell and Happy Hollow Elementary Schools use the continuous learning calendar, and are using days from their intersession weeks to make up for missed classes. Asbell and Happy Hollow will not have school on Memorial Day or Saturday, May 3.

Fayetteville students have missed 11 days of classes this school year due to inclement weather. Alan Wilbourn, the district’s public information officer, said it’s the most days missed in one school year since the 1970s.
