Split Lip Rayfield

Kansas bluegrass band Split Lip Rayfield will be in town Friday night for a show at George’s. Tickets are $12.

The Lightbulb Club has Austin-based big guitar pop band (ala Big Star), Otis the Destroyer on Friday night, with locals Monsterheart and Witchsister. There’s a $5 cover.

There’s a good show at Ryleigh’s as well, with excellent local bands Family History and Basement Brew.

How about a little poetry? Nightbird Books has a Burning Chair Readings event featuring work by Geffrey Davis and Sara Nicholson.

TheatreSquared’s take on the Shakespeare classic, Hamlet, returns to Nadine Baum Studios this weekend as well. There are several chances to check that out.

Jazz, blues, R&B, and soul vocalist Catherine Russell will be at Walton Arts Center for a couple performances Friday night as well. Tickets are on sale at waltonartscenter.org.

Bottle Rocket Gallery has an art opening Friday night, featuring mixed-media sculpture by Puerto Rico born artist Quintin Rivera Toro.

Saturday events, April 19

Springfest, Dickson Street’s annual street party, is set for all day on Saturday. It all kicks off with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by a day full of live music, local vendors, an Easter egg hunt, a 5K run, and of course, the traditional bed races up Dickson Street. Fort Wayne, Indiana indie pop trio Looking for Astronauts are set to perform at Smoke & Barrel on Saturday. Check out a couple tracks on their Bandcamp page. Sounds pretty sweet.

There’s a good show at Kingfish as well, with Little Rock band War Chief, and local songwriter Candy Lee. The weather’s looking good for this one, too.

If you feel like laughing, there’s an improv show at Dickson Theater with local troupe, Phunbags at 7 p.m.

For Big Lebowski fans, JR’s Lightbulb Club is having a “It’s a Nice Day for a White Russian” event, featuring a drunken Wii Sports competition, The Big Lebowski on the projector screen, and music by DJ Clunk.

Maxine’s has another installment of their All You Need to Know Show, and the topic is Holiday. Featured performances include a monologue from actor Mark Landon Smith, the musical comedy of Sam Letchworth, songs from Ghoul Goes West, Mountain Shore, and Hot Milk, and more. The featured expert of the show is a professional Santa Claus.

Sunday is also April 20th (4-20. Get it?). George’s is celebrating with a show by Afroman, Revolution Butterfly, Mountain Sprout, and Purploder.
