Overnight lane closures planned in Fayetteville

Lane closures are planned on sections of Interstate 49 and the Fulbright Expressway this week in Fayetteville.

Both the northbound and southbound inside lanes of the Fulbright Expressway will be closed between Interstate 49 and North Gregg Avenue while crews work to install a cable barrier along the median.

The lanes will be closed each night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Tuesday, March 10. The work is expected to last about a week.

Similar closures are also planned on I-49 near the Cato Springs Road interchange and the Bobby Hopper Tunnel at various times over the next two weeks.

The Arkansas Highway Commission in September awarded an $830,000 contract to Time Striping, Inc. of Van Buren to install the cable barriers along portions of the two roadways. Work on the full project is expected to be completed by mid-2015.

Highway department officials have said research shows that cable barriers lower the chances of crossover accidents which can help save lives.
