The Fayetteville Animal Shelter will offer free pet adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 10 to celebrate a social media milestone and to help empty some cages this summer.

The city’s Animal Services division recently passed 10,000 likes on Facebook, an accomplishment officials said they owe to the community.

“When I started working here about five and half years ago, our Facebook page barely had 1,000 followers and now we have over 10,300 people who interact with our page,” said Justine Lentz, Fayetteville’s Animal Services superintendent. “Social media is such a powerful tool for us. If we have an urgent need for a foster home or if we just want to educate our citizens on something pet related, we can post and just watch it grow and reach so many people.”

Lentz said the shelter currently has over 60 dogs and cats available for adoption. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before heading to their new home.

Pets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, so shelter staff recommend arriving early to the free adoption event. Staff also encourage people to fill out an adoption application before Friday to make sure they’re approved before the event. Applications are available at the shelter, 1640 S. Armstrong Ave., or online at fayetteville-ar.gov.
