Fayetteville seeks 21 residents to serve on volunteer boards and committees

Officials are looking to fill 21 positions on 12 of the city’s boards, commissions and committees.

The list of vacancies includes volunteer seats on the Active Transportation Advisory Committee, Environmental Action Committee, Parks and Recreation Advisory board, and more.

All volunteers must be registered voters who reside within the Fayetteville city limits.

Applications must be mailed or hand delivered to the City Clerk’s office or emailed to [email protected] by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25.

Active Transportation Advisory Committee (2 openings)

Seats available:
– One Community Citizen at Large term ending 12/31/17
– One Community Citizen at Large Bicycle Advocate term ending 12/31/17

Description:This committee reviews public comment, and advises city staff on the prioritization and land acquisition/easements for sidewalks and trails within Fayetteville. Members are also responsible for adopting sidewalk and trails master plans. Recommendations relating to trails are forwarded to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Recommendations relating to sidewalks are forwarded to the Transportation Division.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every other month in City Hall.


Airport Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One Aeronautical term ending 12/31/20

Description: The purpose of this board is to seek both general and technical citizen input and assistance in airport functions, provide and encourage visionary planning and strong leadership for the airport, and assist the City Council in matters pertaining to the operation, improvement, extension, and maintenance of the Airport and other related facilities, property and easements.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 1:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Fayetteville Executive Airport Conference Room.


Audit Committee (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One CPA term ending 12/31/18

Description: The Audit Committee serves in an advisory capacity between the City Council, the city’s independent auditor, internal auditor, and management. The committee will review the city’s financial reports and internal controls regarding finance and accounting.
Meetings: The committee meets at least three times annually, or more frequently as circumstances dictate.


Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One Term Ending 12/31/18

Description: The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks came to be after years of planning, organizing, and fundraising by the Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks, a homegrown, grassroots organization. The Garden is supported by the Society, a non-profit membership organization that exists solely to support and promote the Garden. The support of our community and your membership in the Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks helps to ensure that the Garden will thrive for years to come.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every other month at City Hall.


Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals (2 openings)

Seats available:
– Two unexpired Alternate Member terms ending 03/31/16

Description: The purpose of this board is to hear and to act upon appeals regarding decisions made by the building inspector/superintendent. The board also hears appeals regarding construction materials to be used in new building construction and development. In addition, the board hears appeals regarding enforcement of the minimum housing standards for existing structures as specified in the standard building codes. Information regarding this board can also be found in the standard building code.
Meetings: The Board does not meet on a regular basis, as the requests forwarded to this Board are infrequent. Members are telephoned a week in advance of the meeting.


Energy Improvement District No. 1 (2 openings)

Seats available:
– Two terms ending 12/31/17

Description: Board members would oversee the district’s issuance of tax-exempt bonds and loaning of money to property owners using a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing. PACE is a creative financing mechanism that allows property owners to borrow money for weatherization, energy efficiency, renewable energy or water conservation improvements to their property. PACE enabling legislation was passed by the Arkansas Legislature in the 2013 session and signed by the Governor in April 2013.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month in City Hall.


Environmental Action Committee (3 openings)

Seats available:
– One Local Industry term ending 12/31/18
– Two Community Citizen-at-Large terms ending 12/31/18

Description: This committee works to address environmental concerns, to promote a safe and healthy environment, and to maintain the natural beauty of the environment within the city. It makes recommendations to other city committees and to the City Council.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in City Hall.


Historic District Commission (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired term ending 06/30/17

Description: This commission recommends the establishment of historic districts to the City Council. Its basic function is to promote the educational, cultural, economic, and general welfare of the public through the preservation and the protection of buildings, sites, places and districts of historic interest.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of every other month at City Hall.


Housing Authority Board of Commissioners (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One term ending 12/28/20

Description: The commissioners approve by-laws, resolutions, policies and procedures for administering housing programs for low income persons. The Housing Authority operates units of Public Housing and rental assistance in Fayetteville. Both programs are for low and very low income persons. All funds are provided through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Meetings: The board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month in City Hall.


Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (3 openings)

Seats available:
– Three terms ending 12/31/18

Description: This board recommends priorities for capital improvements and means for financing the same, and prepares an annual progress report on parks and recreation activities.
Meetings: The board meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month in City Hall. In addition to the regularly scheduled board meetings, there are committee meetings that occur on a regular basis.


Town and Gown Advisory Committee (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired Ward 1 Resident term ending 09/30/17

Description: This committee advises the City Council and University of Arkansas on mutually relevant issues including campus expansions, on- and off-campus student housing, and parking and noise issues in areas near the campus.
Meetings: The Committee meets at 3 p.m. on the third Monday of every other month at the AT&T Conference Room, Genesis Technology Incubator, 700 Research Center Blvd., Fayetteville, AR 72701.


Urban Forestry Advisory Board (3 openings)

Seats available:
– One Land Development term ending 12/31/17
– One University Representative term ending 12/31/17
– One Community Citizen at Large term ending 12/31/17

Description: The purpose and intent of the committee is to advise the City Council on urban forestry and arboricultural related issues as an integral part of the city’s green infrastructure and to sit as the Wildland-Urban Interface: Firewise Advisory Board to advise the City Council on wildland and urban development related issues as an integral part of the city’s fire protection program and green infrastructure.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 4:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at City Hall.
