UPDATE: Police on Tuesday announced that the boy and his father were located and are safe.

Fayetteville police are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing 5-year-old boy and his father.

Police said John Scharnhorst, 44, was involved in “a verbal disturbance” in Fayetteville Tuesday evening and left with his son Pilut.

“There is reason to believe that John might be in an altered mental state or under the influence of medication or drugs,” police stated in a post on the department’s Facebook page. “The main concern is that we check on John and Pilut’s well-being.”

Scharnhorst is possibly driving a 2000 Silver Audi S4 with Arkansas vehicle license 004UJB or a 1993 White Ford F35 with Arkansas vehicle license B306371, according to police.

Anyone with information about the location of John or Pilut is urged to contact the Fayetteville Police Department at 479-587-3555.
