Police have released the names of the suspect and victim in a murder that took place over the weekend in west Fayetteville.

Jeremy Borders, 41, of Fayetteville, was arrested in connection with the first-degree murder of Joe Bob Scarborough, who was found dead near the intersection of Old Farmington Road and South Green Point Trace on Sunday afternoon.

According to a police report, officers responded to a 911 disturbance call on Old Farmington Road at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Once on the scene, police discovered Scarborough, 48, also of Fayetteville, laying dead in the road with multiple stab wounds to his torso and face.

Police said Borders was standing nearby, covered in blood, uttering the words, “I didn’t mean to kill him; I didn’t want him to kill me.” A trail of blood led from Borders to Scarborough, and a knife was recovered from the scene, according to the report.

Borders is being held at the Washington County Detention Center with no bond set.
