Weekend Flyer: Sex Tips, Led Zeppelin (sorta), the Buffalo Boogie and more

There are two big shows at Walton Arts Center on Friday night. In Baum Walker Hall, Classics Albums Live will be performing Led Zeppelin II in its entirety, and in the new Starr Theatre, there’s a performance of the comedy Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man.

Music-wise, Wichita indie band The Travel Guide will be at Smoke & Barrel Friday night (check them out here), and local rockers Ten High will perform at The Syc House with Joplin band, Of Course Not.

Snake Girty Turncoat

Local variety show Last Saturday has found a new home. The monthly show featuring a mixture of music, comedy, spoken word, and other performances will now be setting up shop at the American Legion at 1195 Curtis Ave. This month, the show features The Ozark Travelers, JR Soapbox, Preston Smith and Snake Girty Turncoat.

Also in music, St. Louis Blues act Aaron Kamm & The One Drops will perform at George’s Saturday night with locals, Vintage Pistol, and there’s an Americana show at Smoke & Barrel with Levi Parham, and The Mammoths.

Wanna see the symphony? SoNA will be performing their Masterworks I show at the Walton Arts Center on Saturday night, featuring the talents of virtuoso Russian-American pianist Natasha Paremski. Here’s some more information.

In Springdale, excellent new(ish) local band Youth Pastor will performing at Black Apple Crossing, the cidery located on Emma Street downtown.

The Cate Brothers

A whole bunch of bands are coming together at George’s to raise money to help protect the Buffalo National River on Sunday. The event, called Buffalo Boogie, features music by locals The Cate Brothers, Leah & The Mojo Doctors, Jim Mills & The Hellbenders, The Sumler/Huff Band, and Bill Dollar and Loose Change. There’s no cover, but a $5 donation to the cause is recommended.

Also Sunday night, there’s a celebration of the music of Leonard Cohen happening at Maxine’s Tap Room. The show will feature tributes from local musicians Jeff Kearney, Randall Shreve, Jamie Lou, Warren Dietzel, Melody Pond, Adam Cox, and Candice Houston.
