Local musicians to perform tribute to Gillian Welch at Maxine’s during Roots Festival

Of all the impressive musicians that have graced the lineup of the Fayetteville Roots Festival, singer/songwriter Gillian Welch has yet to perform at the annual event.

And even though Welch is not on the festival lineup in 2017 either, some festival attendees will still be able to hear her songs performed this year.

A group of local musicians will perform a tribute to Welch’s music during the festival at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27 at Maxine’s Tap Room.

The all-female group includes Dana Louise, Rochelle Bradshaw, Meredith Kimbrough, Jamie Lou Connolly, Opal Agafia, Martha Cardwell, Liz Garriss, Ashtyn Nilsen Barbaree, and Stephanie Petet. Each of the local ladies will play 1-2 of Welch’s songs.

The show is one of several free shows scheduled at Maxine’s this year. And even though most of the Fayetteville Roots Festival shows are sold out this year, the Maxine’s shows will be open on a first-come, first served basis.

In addition to the Welch tribute, Dana Louise & The Glorious Birds will play a free show at Maxine’s on Friday night, Yep Roc recording artist The Stray Birds will play Saturday night, and former Fayettevillian Shawn James will back in town to play a biscuit brunch at the bar at noon on Sunday. The Welch tribute will take place at 4 p.m., and later on Sunday night, Kyle Lacey & The Harlem River Noise will take the stage at around 8:30 p.m.

There’s no cover, and no ticket required to any of the shows at Maxine’s.
