Cyclist injured after hitting barbed wire trap on trail in south Fayetteville

A 72-year-old cyclist suffered a head injury Friday after riding into a strand of barbed wire stretched across the trail path near the intersection of Frisco and Tsa La Gi trails in south Fayetteville.

The incident was reported by another cyclist who discovered the injured man lying unconscious on his back in the dark at around 5:30 a.m. The man has since been released from Washington Regional Medical Center.

According to reports, someone pulled the wire from a nearby fence and attached it to a sign post on the opposite side of the trail at about chest level.

Police are treating the incident as a criminal investigation.
