Martin Luther King Jr. Day events planned in Fayetteville

Locals participate in the Freedom March during Martin Luther King Jr. Day festivities

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is coming up on Monday, Jan. 15, and several events to commemorate the holiday are planned in Fayetteville.

The festivities begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 with a community service project at the Yvonne Richardson Community Center.

On Sunday, Jan. 14, a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service is planned at St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville at 3 p.m. The service will feature speaker Dr. Roderick L. Smothers, President of Philander Smith College.

Monday, Jan. 15 will kick off with a prayer breakfast at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House at 8 a.m.

The annual MLK Freedom March will take place at 11:15 a.m., beginning at the corner of MLK Jr. Boulevard and Razorback Road in Fayetteville, and a noon-day vigil is planned at Verizon Ballroom after that.
