Fayetteville seeks 16 volunteers for boards and committees

Fayetteville Planning Commission / Government Channel

Fayetteville officials are looking to fill 16 positions on 11 of the city’s boards, commissions and committees.

The list of vacancies includes volunteer seats on the Advertising and Promotion Commission, Planning Commission, Fayetteville Public Library Board of Trustees and more.

All volunteers must be registered voters who reside within the Fayetteville city limits.

Applications must be mailed or hand delivered to the City Clerk’s office or emailed to [email protected] by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23.

Advertising and Promotion Commission (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One tourism industry term ending 3/31/22

Description: This group administers the Advertising and Promotion Fund, which is generated by the local hotel, motel, and restaurant (HMR) tax. The fund is used for the advertisement and promotion of the city and its environs, and/or construction, reconstruction, repair, maintenance, improvement, equipping, and operation of public recreation facilities.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Fayetteville Town Center.


Animal Services Advisory Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One citizen-at-large term ending 6/30/21

Description: This board acts in an advisory capacity on policy matters of the Animal Services Division, and works to stimulate and encourage communication with the community.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the first Monday of the second month of each quarter at 6 p.m. in City Hall.


Board of Adjustments (3 openings)

Seats available:
– Three terms ending 3/31/21

Description: The Board of Adjustments hears and decides appeals where it is alleged there is error or ambiguity in any order, requirement, decision, interpretation, or determination made by the City Planner in the enforcement of Zoning Chapter 160-164.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 3:45 p.m. in City Hall.


Civil Service Commission (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired citizen-at-large term ending 03/31/24

Description: The Civil Service Commission is responsible for examining and establishing eligibility lists for appointments and promotions within the police and fire Departments. The commission also acts upon appeals and disciplinary action taken by the police and fire chiefs and the mayor. Each commissioner must be a resident of the city for at least three years immediately preceding their appointment.
Meetings: Meetings are held whenever needed to administer tests and update eligibility lists. Meetings are generally held during normal business hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One term ending 3/31/23

Description: The purpose of this board is to hear and to act upon appeals regarding decisions made by the building inspector/superintendent. The board also hears appeals regarding construction materials to be used in new building construction and development. In addition, the board hears appeals regarding enforcement of the minimum housing standards for existing structures as specified in the standard building codes. Information regarding this board can also be found in the standard building code.
Meetings: The Board does not meet on a regular basis, as the requests forwarded to this Board are infrequent. Members are telephoned a week in advance of the meeting.


Fayetteville Public Library Board of Trustees (2 openings)

Seats available:
– Two terms ending 04/01/23

Description: The purpose of the Board of Trustees is to provide leadership in performing the mission of the Library; to serve as a liaison between the library and the city; and to ensure the library meets the informational, educational and recreational needs of the community.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held on the third Monday of even-numbered months at 4 p.m at the Fayetteville Public Library.


Housing Authority Board of Commissioners (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired resident term ending 12/28/18

Description: The commissioners approve by-laws, resolutions, policies and procedures for administering housing programs for low income persons. The Housing Authority operates units of Public Housing and rental assistance in Fayetteville. Both programs are for low and very low income persons. All funds are provided through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Meetings: The board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month in City Hall.


Planning Commission (3 openings)

Seats available:
– Three terms ending 3/31/21

Description: The commission makes recommendations to the City Council regarding zoning changes, all annexations, and conditional uses. The commission also makes recommendations concerning amendments or changes to the Master Street Plan, General Land Use Plan, or other comprehensive planning elements.
Meets: Regular meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 5:30 p.m. in room 219 of the City Administration Building.


Telecommunications Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One term ending 06/30/22

Description: The board advises the City Council on telecommunication issues and coordinates and oversees telecommunications franchise systems and use of the public rights of way designated for public access, educational, and governmental (PEG) use in the City of Fayetteville as part of the city’s telecommunication infrastructure.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in Room 219 of City Hall.


Town and Gown Advisory Committee (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired University of Arkansas Student living off campus term ending 09/30/19 appointed by the Mayor

Description: This committee advises the City Council and University of Arkansas on mutually relevant issues including campus expansions, on- and off-campus student housing, and parking and noise issues in areas near the campus.
Meetings: The Committee meets the third Monday every other month at 3 p.m. at the AT&T Conference Room, Genesis Technology Incubator, 700 Research Center Blvd., Fayetteville, AR 72701.


Urban Forestry Advisory Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired community citizen-at-large term ending 12/31/19

Description: The purpose and intent of the committee is to advise the City Council on urban forestry and arboricultural related issues as an integral part of the city’s green infrastructure and to sit as the Wildland-Urban Interface: Firewise Advisory Board to advise the City Council on wildland and urban development related issues as an integral part of the city’s fire protection program and green infrastructure.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 4 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at City Hall.
