Restaurant news: Puritan Coffee + Beer, Smudgies Dessert Lab, Renzo’s Pasta and Italian Steakhouse, and more

Get hungry, Fayetteville. It’s time for another installment of restaurant news.

Here’s what we know about some places that have opened, closed, or that plan to soon open in Fayetteville.

Puritan Coffee + Beer

Puritan Coffee & Beer (formerly Puritan Brew Co.) recently opened their second Fayetteville location.

The coffee shop / craft beer bar is now open for business in the Uptown Fayetteville Apartments + Shops at 3959 N. Steele Blvd in Fayetteville.

The restaurant, coffee shop, and bar, which originally opened on Dickson Street in 2014, is well known for its coffee and extensive craft beer collection.

Burton’s Creamery, a local ice cream shop, shares the space with Puritan.

Smudgies Dessert Labs

Speaking of ice cream, a new sweet treat place has also opened downtown.

Locals Cory Tran and Jonathan Montgomery recently opened a dessert restaurant called Smudgies Dessert Lab at the southwest corner of Dickson Street and College Avenue (241 N. College Ave.)

The new place serves all kinds of desserts, including milkshakes, concretes, donuts filled with ice cream, and other fun twists on classic desserts.

Smudgies is open Mon-Thurs from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m., Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Pig & Pickle / Bear’s Place

Staff photo

Sad news, y’all. Bear’s Place closed their doors for good recently.

The good news is a new restaurant called Pig & Pickle is in talks with the building owners to take over the space soon. We don’t know much about the new place yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

Renzo’s Pasta & Italian Steakhouse

Staff photo

A new restaurant is finally taking over the space formerly home to Four Corners Kitchen / Hogs Breath Eatery.

Signs for the new place, to be called Renzo’s Pasta & Italian Steakhouse, appeared on the building recently.

If the name is any indication, Renzo’s will focus on pastas and steaks with an Italian flare. We haven’t been able to track down opening information, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.

Serrano’s

Staff photo

A new Mexican restaurant is planning to take over the old Ruby Tuesday’s building on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The new place is called Serrano’s, and is a second location for a restaurant by the same name from Conway.

According to a post on their Facebook page, the restaurant is now hiring, and is planning to open “soon.”

Los Tres Hermanos

Speaking of Mexican restaurants, a new place opened recently in the space formerly home to El Camino Real (RIP).

The restaurant was created by the same folks that run Taqueria Guanjuato in Springdale.

Here’s a copy of their menu.

They are open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Dickey’s Barbecue

Dickey’s is set to reopen soon.

The restaurant chain had closed their NWA locations over the holidays, but a new franchisee has reopened the Lowell location. According to a spokesman for the company, the Rogers location will reopen March 29, and the Fayetteville location will reopen on April 12.

The Fayetteville restaurant is located at 3316 Grove Dr. #4, next to Planet Fitness off Wedington Drive.

Flying Burrito Co.

Staff photo

Local restaurant Flying Burrito Co. closed their flagship downtown location earlier this month after more than 15 years.

The restaurant got its start on Spring Street, in the space currently home to Rolando’s, before moving up to Dickson Street in 2013 to be closer to the UA after a couple chain burrito restaurants moved in.

Flying Burrito last year opened a franchise location on the campus of the UA in the fall of 2016 which may have cannibalized some of their Dickson Street business.

The restaurant still operates their on campus location, as well as their location at 3200 N. College Ave. location in Fayetteville. They also have locations in Springdale and Bentonville.

Starbuz Rendezvous Hookah Lounge

Staff photo

The building formerly home to Deluxe Burger on Dickson Street has found a new tenant.

Signs for Starbuz Hookah Lounge have appeared in front of the building, located at at 550 W. Dickson Street.

For those who aren’t familiar, hookah bars are establishments that allow patrons to smoke flavored tobaccos from a communal “hookah.” There have been a handful of them open around Dickson Street over the years, including one located for a while in the building next door that is currently home to Arsaga’s at the Depot.

In addition to flavored tobacco, the establishment has also applied for a license to serve beer and wine.

Renovations of the space are underway. We’re not sure when the new business plans to open.

Update: It looks like the business will open this weekend under the name Rendezvous Hookah Lounge.

Nomad’s Trailside

Staff photo

A new brunch and pizza bar is coming to Fayetteville this spring.

The new place, called Nomad’s Trailside, is a collaboration by the owners of Nomad’s Music Lounge and Hogshead Tours.

It will be located in a new collection of commercial buildings currently under construction on Ash Street, overlooking the Razorback Greenway in central Fayetteville.

According to their Facebook page, the restaurant will focus on pizza, brunch, craft beer, and cocktails.

If all goes well, the new place will open sometime this spring.

Fat Bottomed Girl’s Cupcake Shoppe

Staff photo

Block Avenue in Fayetteville will soon be a little bit sweeter.

That’s because Hot Springs-based dessert restaurant Fat Bottomed Girl’s Cupcake Shoppe will soon open a location on the street.

The restaurant, which is best known for its appearance on Season 2 of Food Network reality show “Cupcake Wars”, is set to open a shop at 11 N. Block Ave., in the space formerly home to The French Quarters.

According to a recent post on the company’s Facebook page, the Fayetteville location will carry more than 20 flavors of cupcakes, 32 flavors of ice cream, 20 flavors of cotton candy, gourmet candies, coffee, cookie sandwiches, and other sweet treats.

The new shop will include a seating area and a gift shop as part of the design.

If all goes well, the owners plan to open the new restaurant sometime before the end of the month.

South in your Mouth

Staff photo

The South in your Mouth Food truck behind Fayetteville Funky Yard Sale has been open for a bit, but we’ve missed them in a couple Restaurant News segments, so we thought they deserve a mention.

The truck serves a rotating menu of comfort food favorites.

It is open Friday-Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. In addition, they bring food to Brewskis on Saturday night, and they’ll are Columbus House on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m.
