Restaurant and Bar News: Green Submarine, Mamaka, and more

Get hungry, Fayetteville. It’s time for another installment of restaurant news.

Here’s what we know about some places that have opened, closed, or that plan to soon open in Fayetteville.

Green Submarine

It looks like Green Submarine is expanding to the east side of town.

According to an application submitted to the Arkansas Department of Health, the local sandwich shop located on Wedington Drive is working on a second location at 1830 N. Crossover Road in Fayetteville, in a building formerly home to Bak Stage Dance.

Owner Nathan Jendeski opened the original Green Submarine restaurant in a small space on Wedington Drive around 2010. The restaurant quickly found popularity among west Fayetteville residents, and expanded next door into the former Betty Joe Corner gas station at 3315 W. Wedington Dr. in 2012.

It would be the second attempt at expansion for the restaurant. A franchisee opened a Green Submarine location on Dickson Street that was open for about a year until closing down in late 2015.

Mamaka Bowls

Staff photo

A new restaurant specializing in acai bowls will soon open in the new mixed-use development on Prairie Street.

The new place, called Mamaka Bowls, will be located at 495 W Prairie St.

We’ve heard that they plan to be open for business sometime this week.

Dairy Queen

Staff photo

Dairy Queen, it appears, is working on a couple restaurants in Fayetteville at the moment.

We’ve known for a while about the location in the works near the corner of Crossover Road and Citizens Drive, but now we’re hearing the restaurant also has a restaurant planned in the building formerly home to Hardee’s at 2190 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Zaxby’s

Georgia-based chicken restaurant chain Zaxby’s recently closed their location at 3251 N. College Avenue.

A note posted on the door of the restaurant announced the closure.

From the note:

As part of our development strategy, we have permanently closed this location. Our locations in Bentonville, Springdale, Siloam Springs, and on MLK in Fayetteville are still open for business.

We do have plans to reopen a second Fayetteville store, as well as additional stores in the NWA area.

The note also indicated that the entire staff of the College Avenue restaurant have been transferred to other locations.

Dunkin’ Donuts

The Dunkin’ Donuts in south Fayetteville has closed, and a local chain will soon take over the space.

Signs announcing the closure of the restaurant, located at 1855 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., were posted over the weekend.

“We had to make the difficult decision to close this store. While we never like to close a store, that’s sometimes part of the restaurant business,” the sign stated.

Dunkin’ Donuts specializes in breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and of course, donuts. The chain still operates two locations in Springdale, as well as two others in Benton County.

Slim Chickens

Staff photo

Local restaurant chain Slim Chickens is moving into the space formerly home to Dunkin’ Donuts, restaurant CEO Tom Gordon told us.

It will be the fifth Slim Chickens location in Fayetteville for the company. The Fayetteville-based company has grown rapidly in recent years after getting its start on College Avenue in 2003. Since then, Slim Chickens has expanded to operate more than 70 locations in 15 states in the US, with several others in the works. The company also recently expanded internationally to Kuwait and England.

Remodeling of the location will begin soon. If all goes well, the new restaurant will be open in late summer/early fall.

Vault

Staff photo

Some locals recently opened a new bar in the basement of the building at 112 W. Center Street (known locally as the EJ Ball Building).

The new place is called Vault, named for the former bank vault where it’s located, and focuses primarily on craft cocktails with an emphasis on an extensive selection of bourbon.

It’s owned by friends and longtime locals Chris Baribeau, Nick Hamon, and Michael Jordan.

The new bar has been open quietly for a week or so, and is planning a ‘Cinco de Derby Day’ grand opening party on Saturday, May 5 featuring a pop-up menu of juleps and margaritas in addition to their regular menu. Local food truck Cathead Biscuits will also be on hand with food.

Pinpoint Fayetteville

Staff photo

Ladies and gentlemen, Fayetteville finally has its very own pinball bar.

The long-awaited Pinpoint Fayetteville has been open the past couple weekends with some limited hours, and will be open regular hours beginning on May 3.

For those who aren’t familiar, the bar was created by local “Renaissance man of good times” Bo Counts, and is located in the basement of the old JR’s Lighbulb Club space at 23 Block Avenue.

The new bar features a dozen(ish) vintage pinball machines, and will host events on occasion, like their upcoming “Play” event set for Saturday, May 6 featuring local DJ’s Beat Bachs (Counts), EYO, m.bolez, and Shortfuze.

Prairie Avenue Bar & Tap

Staff photo

A new bar called Prairie Avenue Bar & Tap is coming soon to the new building at 495 Prairie St.

The new spot plans to have 18 taps featuring only Arkansas beers, and decor celebrating cycling, kiyaking, and other outdoor sports.

Manager Dan Daniel said if all goes well, the plan is to open by the middle of this summer.

VIP Club

Staff photo

Speaking of new bars, another spot has opened on West Avenue.

VIP Club held their official grand opening on April 20.

The club is located at 326 N West Ave., Suite #6, and is open Wednesday-Saturday from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m.

J.V.A. Delicious Hot Dogs

Staff photo

A new hotdog stand has popped up on Township Street.

JVA Delicious Hot Dogs is located next to the Beer Keg at 60 E. Township St.

As the name suggests, the restaurant serves hot dogs, but we’ve also seen tacos, burritos, tamales, and other items on the menu.

Cathead Biscuits

Staff photo

Local biscuit truck, Cathead Biscuits, has a new location.

The mobile restaurant is now located on West Avenue, across from Magnolia Company in Fayetteville.

The truck serves biscuits, biscuit sandwiches, and other breakfast-y items. They’re open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Big Sexy Food

Staff photo

Local food truck Big Sexy Food has returned to Fayetteville.

The original truck has relocated to Rogers, but a new trailer is now located next to the new building at 495 Prairie Street (next to the aforementioned Mamaka Bowls and Prairie Avenue Bar & Tap.).

The menu focuses primarily on burgers and flatbread sandwiches.
