One of the most soulful voices in Fayetteville is gone too soon.

Beloved local musician Darren Ray passed away over the weekend after a battle with cancer. He was 54 years old.

Ray was well known for his work as a solo artist, or as a singer and guitarist in one of his bands like The Uncrowned Kings, Big Uns, Big Bad Bubba, The Darren Ray Band, and many others.

Working in restaurants and bars though college, I had the chance to interact with him pretty often over the years, and in addition to being talented, he was also genuinely one of the nicest musicians I ever encountered.

Friends, family, and fans gathered to pay their respects to the musician at a celebration of his life held Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

According to his obituary, memorials may be made in Darren Ray’s memory to Willard Walker Hospice Home, 325 E Longview St, Fayetteville, Ark., 72703.
