Artist’s Laboratory Theatre will host a People’s State of the Union Story Circle on Saturday, Jan. 26 inside the venue, located at 1030 S. College Ave. in Fayetteville.

The participatory, community-centric event invites guests to join story circles and share their own take on the state of the union, guided by facilitated prompts.

Similar events have been held in over 500 communities since 2015 when the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture first promoted the idea.

From the department:

In January of most years, the President delivers a State of the Union Address highlighting the past year and suggesting priorities for the coming year. It’s a broadcast from one to many. But democracy is a conversation, not a monologue. Understanding the state of our union takes We the People reflecting in our own communities on our challenges and opportunities locally, nationally, and globally.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for a social hour at the Fayetteville event. The story circle begins at 7 p.m. A suggested donation of $5-$10 is encouraged. Seating is limited, and reservations can be made online at Vendini.com.

Select stories will be uploaded to the department’s story portal for possible inclusion in the annual Poetic Address to the Nation.
