Fayetteville is offering a bounty on Bradford pear trees this spring.
Bradford pears are considered an invasive species that can spread quickly and choke out the area’s native trees, shrubs and flowers.
In an effort to spread awareness and discourage the spread of invasive trees, city staff will give one native tree to any resident who cuts down a Bradford pear on their property.
To qualify, residents should take a picture of their cut-down Bradford pear tree while they are in bloom from mid-March to early April. Then bring the photograph to one of two locations (listed below) or email the picture to [email protected]. Include your name, address, and phone number. Trees are limited to one per household while supplies last. They will be given away on a first-come first-serve basis. City staff are unable to cut down trees, so property owners should cut down their own tree or hire a company.
Native tree species to be given away include American plum, flowering dogwood, eastern redbud, hawthorn, and serviceberry.
