Fayetteville encourages composting by selling half-price compost bin kits

Fayetteville officials are encouraging residents to compost by offering discounted compost bin kits.

The first 150 residents to order a compost bin kit will receive a half-price discount. The $25 price is made possible through a grant from the Boston Mountain Solid Waste District. Once the first 150 kits are gone, the next 100 bins purchased at full price ($49.95 or $99 at Home Depot) will come with a free kitchen scrap collection pail and education dial.

The kits are available for sale through Monday, May 27 at www.fayetteville-ar.gov/compostbinsale. All orders must be picked up on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the city parking lot located across the street from the Happy Hollow Recycling Drop-Off Center, 1420 S. Happy Hollow Road.

Residents can also purchase other equipment from the website, including rain barrels, compost aerators, screens, pails and open compost/leaf corrals.

Officials said the goal of the program is to divert food scraps from the waste stream and raise awareness about the benefits of composting, as part of Compost Awareness Week from May 5-11.
