Weekend Flyer: Tre Burt, Cam Spinks, Juneteenth celebrations, Bentonville Bike Fest, and more

Anybody else noticed every seven days or so it’s Friday again, and we’re getting ready for another weekend around here? I’m going to start tracking it to see if it’s a coincidence or not. Could be a pattern. Seems like it’s been going on for as long as we’ve been running the Flyer. Maybe longer?

Just as there has been for the better part of the last century, there’s music at George’s for happy hour on Friday night. This week, local rockers Honeyjack will provide the dancing tunes. Later on, George’s has a country show with Tulsa artist Jon Wolfe and Little Rock-based country band, Hayefield. On Saturday, the venue will host Alabama-based country artist and former contestant on NBC’s The Voice, Cam Spinks, for a show. George’s ticket info is here.

Saturday is Juneteenth, and there are a few celebrations planned around the region. On Friday night up in Bentonville, there will be a Juneteenth Spotlight talk at Crystal Bridges with author Hannibal Johnson, who published a book titled Black Wall Street 101 about the 1921 Tulsa race massacre. Here’s more info about that.

Also in Juneteenth celebrations, Crystal Bridges will host a show featuring The Sounds of Freedom featuring Dee Dee Jones and Spud Howard on Saturday night, and there’s an event called Freedom Festival in downtown Springdale on Saturday featuring live music, food trucks, and more. Performers include Dazz & Brie, Jukeboxx, Big Piph & Tomorrow Maybe, and more. Here’s a bit more about that.

The folks behind Fayetteville Roots Festival a couple of street shows this weekend on the square. On Friday night, Sacramento-based songwriter Tre Burt will perform on the Roots HQ stage, and on Saturday, festival founders Bryan and Bernice Hembree’s band Smokey & The Mirror are set to play. Both artists have songs about civil rights issues that will have extra resonance on Juneteenth weekend. Check out Burt’s Under the Devil’s Knee, and Smokey and the Mirror’s Tulsa 1921.

It’s the last weekend to check out TheatreSquared’s show My Father’s War, written by artistic director Robert Ford. Here’s ticket info.

There’s a bike festival in Bentonville this weekend. There are group rides, and bike shows, and live music by local band Benjamin Del Shreve and others. Here’s more on that.

There’s a ton more below. Have fun, buds.
