A new musical based on a beloved children’s novel will open in Fayetteville this week.

Local professional theatre company TheatreSquared will present a new musical version of Roald Dahl’s story Matilda beginning on Thursday, June 24 at the new performing arts space inside the Fayetteville Public Library.

The show, which has won five Tony Awards, is set to run through July 18.

From the description:

Based on the beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl, the five-time Tony Award winner Matilda is an international phenomenon. Matilda tells the story of an extraordinary girl who dares to change her own destiny. A classic underdog story, Matilda’s journey sets an incredible example of how to stand up for what is right—no matter your stature.

Young actors Leanne Parks and Piper Wallace alternate in the role of Matilda, and Miss Honey will be played by Broadway veteran Elisabeth Evans.

Notably, the show will be the first to be performed in the new 600-seat performing arts center inside the newly-remodeled library. The entire run of the musical will take place in the new facility, located at 401 W. Mountain St. in Fayetteville.

A few COVID-19 rules will be in place. Fully vaccinated guests can take in the show without face coverings, according to the T2 website. Face coverings will be required for those who have not received a vaccine, and they will be available at check-in for anyone who doesn’t bring one to the performance.

Tickets to the show range from around $34-$61, and are available for purchase at theatre2.org.
