A local venue that has become a crucial part of the local music scene quietly closed its doors over the weekend.

Backspace, the local DIY venue located in the small space at the back of the Quonset hut building off Center street in Fayetteville, held their final event last Sunday, Sept. 12.

The venue provided a place for up-and-coming bands and well as more established local acts, and touring bands to perform over the years, as well as a community space for art shows, comedy events, square dances, fundraisers, and so much more.

The pandemic, and other factors lead to the decision to close the venue.

From the announcement:

All things must pass, and after a wonderful 7 1/2 year run, it’s Backspace’s time to pass the torch to the next great Northwest Arkansas DIY venues. We have appreciated all the love and support over the years and the amazing community that formed around shows and arts of all kinds, but the prolonged pandemic and space repair needs simply cannot keep up with the cost of renting a space that runs on live events.

It was a special place for music and community. Here’s hoping some of the spirit of the venue can be recreated in Fayetteville again.
