Slim Chickens hasn’t opened a location in the state of Maine just yet, but the Fayetteville-based restaurant chain has apparently caught the attention of one of the Pine Tree State’s most famous writers.

The restaurant received a casual mention in Stephen King’s latest novel, Billy Summers, resulting in some recent excitement from fans of the restaurant and the writer on social media.

Slim Chickens posted about the mention on the company’s Instagram account on Tuesday.

“When your chicken sandwiches and shakes are so good, they get mentioned in the new Stephen King novel,” the post read.

The restaurant is mentioned in the 17th chapter of the book, under the second heading as lead character Billy Summers picks up lunch from the restaurant.

From the passage:

There’s a Slim Chickens a quarter mile down the service road. Billy drives through and brings back food and shakes. The way she keeps her eyes on her chicken-and-bacon sandwich, planning the next bite even while she’s chewing the one in her mouth pleases him…

Slim Chickens co-founder Greg Smart said the mention came as a surprise.

“We didn’t know about it until the book came out,” he said. “He is one of my favorite writers, so it was a pretty cool surprise.”

Billy Summers is a crime novel by King, and was officially released on Aug. 3. The book reached No. 1 on the New York Times Bestsellers list on Aug. 22.

Slim Chickens got its start in Fayetteville on College Avenue in 2003. The restaurant has since grown to operate more than 130 locations in 25 states, along with overseas restaurants in Kuwait and the UK. The company still operates their headquarters out of Fayetteville.
