UPDATED: Fayetteville seeks 34 volunteers for boards and committees

UPDATE 11/04/21: City officials announced two additional vacancies – one on the Animal Services Advisory Board and one on the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners – for a total of 32 volunteers needed in this round.

UPDATE 11/18/21: Officials announced two more vacancies – one on the Animal Services Advisory Board and one on the Fayetteville Arts Council – for a total of 34 volunteers needed in this round.

Fayetteville officials are looking to fill 34 positions on 12 of the city’s boards, commissions and committees.

The list of vacancies includes seats on the Active Transportation Advisory Committee, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and the newly created commission charged with preserving historical Black structures and cemeteries and creating Black historical markers.

All volunteers must be registered voters who reside within the Fayetteville city limits. Those who are not Fayetteville registered voters will need to provide proof of residency. All applicants must submit a new application for each board, commission or committee.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19.

After the application period ends, the Nominating Committee will look over the applicants and schedule interviews with selected individuals. The committee will then make their recommendations to the City Council for final approval. And yes, some board positions are nominated by the mayor, but the application process is the same.

Active Transportation Advisory Committee (2 openings)

Seats available:
– One Bicycle Advocate term ending 12/31/23
– One term ending 12/31/23

Description:This committee reviews public comment, and advises city staff on the prioritization and land acquisition/easements for sidewalks and trails within Fayetteville. Members are also responsible for adopting sidewalk and trails master plans. Recommendations relating to trails are forwarded to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Recommendations relating to sidewalks are forwarded to the Transportation Division.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month in City Hall.


Airport Board (3 openings)

Seats available:
– One University of Arkansas term ending 12/31/26
– One Aeronautical term ending 12/31/26
– One unexpired Aeronautical term ending 12/31/25

Description: The purpose of this board is to seek both general and technical citizen input and assistance in airport functions, provide and encourage visionary planning and strong leadership for the airport, and assist the City Council in matters pertaining to the operation, improvement, extension, and maintenance of the Airport and other related facilities, property and easements.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Fayetteville Executive Airport Conference Room.


Animal Services Advisory Board (3 openings)

Seats available:
– One unexpired Business Representative term ending 06/30/22
– Two unexpired Citizen at Large terms ending 06/30/24

Description: This board acts in an advisory capacity on policy matters of the Animal Services Division, and works to stimulate and encourage communication with the community.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the first Monday of the second month of each quarter at 6 p.m. in City Hall.


Audit Committee (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One term ending 12/31/24

Description: The Audit Committee serves in an advisory capacity between the City Council, the city’s independent auditor, internal auditor, and management. The committee will review the city’s financial reports and internal controls regarding finance and accounting.
Meetings: The committee meets at least three times annually, or more frequently as circumstances dictate.


Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks (1 opening)

Seats available:

Description: The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks came to be after years of planning, organizing, and fundraising by the Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks, a homegrown, grassroots organization. The Garden is supported by the Society, a non-profit membership organization that exists solely to support and promote the Garden. The support of our community and your membership in the Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks helps to ensure that the Garden will thrive for years to come.
Meetings: Notification of meetings is prepared by Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks.


Commission to Preserve Historical Black Structures and Cemeteries and to Create Black Historical Markers (6 openings)

– One member familiar with a Historical Black Church in Fayetteville term ending TBD

Description: The purpose of this commission is to recognize, acknowledge, protect and preserve historical Black structures and cemeteries in honor of the vision, accomplishment, and perseverance of Fayetteville’s early Black families and individuals and the churches and other structures they built. Another purpose is the creation of Black historical markers to recognize the struggles and achievements of the city’s Black citizens to promote diversity and equality for all Fayetteville residents and to oppose discrimination against any person in Fayetteville.
Meetings: The commission meet at least once quarterly.


Energy Improvement District No. 1 (3 openings)

Seats available:
– Three terms ending 12/31/23

Description: Board members would oversee the district’s issuance of tax-exempt bonds and loaning of money to property owners using a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing. PACE is a creative financing mechanism that allows property owners to borrow money for weatherization, energy efficiency, renewable energy or water conservation improvements to their property. PACE enabling legislation was passed by the Arkansas Legislature in the 2013 session and signed by the Governor in April 2013.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every other month in City Hall.


Environmental Action Committee (4 openings)

Seats available:
– Two Community Citizen at Large terms ending 12/31/24
– One unexpired Community Citizen at Large term ending 12/31/22
– One Local Industry term ending 12/31/24

Description: This committee works to address environmental concerns, to promote a safe and healthy environment, and to maintain the natural beauty of the environment within the city. It makes recommendations to other city committees and to the City Council.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in City Hall.


Fayetteville Arts Council (1 opening)

Seats available:

Description: Helps define the community’s identity and sense of place, promote social interaction, bring the arts into everyday life and memorialize the past while expressing shared values for the future.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month in City Hall.


Housing Authority Board of Commissioners (2 openings)

Seats available:
– One term ending 12/28/26
– One unexpired term ending 12/28/25

Description: The commissioners approve by-laws, resolutions, policies and procedures for administering housing programs for low income persons. The Housing Authority operates units of Public Housing and rental assistance in Fayetteville. Both programs are for low and very low income persons. All funds are provided through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Meetings: The board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month in City Hall.


Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (3 openings)

Seats available:
– Three terms ending 12/31/24

Description: This board recommends priorities for capital improvements and means for financing the same, and prepares an annual progress report on parks and recreation activities.
Meetings: The board meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month in City Hall. In addition to the regularly scheduled board meetings, there are committee meetings that occur on a regular basis.


PEG Advisory Board (1 opening)

Description: This board advises the City Council on issues related to public access, educational, and government (PEG) television use in the City of Fayetteville.
Meetings: Meets at least once every quarter at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.


Urban Forestry Advisory Board (4 openings)

Description: The purpose and intent of the committee is to advise the City Council on urban forestry and arboricultural related issues as an integral part of the city’s green infrastructure and to sit as the Wildland-Urban Interface: Firewise Advisory Board to advise the City Council on wildland and urban development related issues as an integral part of the city’s fire protection program and green infrastructure.
