City officials are seeking proposals from artists interested in creating murals on the retaining wall along Archibald Yell Boulevard near downtown Fayetteville.

Two murals are proposed for the wall that runs along the west side of Archibald Yell from Rock Street to South Block Avenue. One mural will be painted on each end of the wall.

The Fayetteville Arts Council will serve as the selection committee, and has selected a theme of “Experience the Adventure of Fayetteville!” for the murals.

“The Arts Council will work with the artist(s) chosen to be sure that the proposed artworks are appropriate to the space and compatible with one another to create a positive, cohesive experience for travelers along Archibald Yell in either direction,” a news release stated.

Proposals are due by 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2022.

A non-mandatory, pre-proposal conference will be held virtually on Zoom during the next Fayetteville Arts Council meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15. Registration will be available beginning Dec. 10 through the city’s public meetings calendar.

A second mural is planned next to the Fayetteville Bulldogs mural at Archibald Yell and Rock Street.

The artists will be chosen in two phases, according to the release. Four artists will be selected and paid $500 each to receive feedback and prepare a more in-depth sketch of their proposal for the site. The council will then select one or two artists to complete the work.

The murals will be different sizes.

The smaller mural will be located at the north end of the retaining wall at the intersection of Rock Street. It includes about 108 square feet, and would stretch from the end of the wall up to the edge of the existing Fayetteville Bulldogs mural. Payment for the smaller mural is set at $3,800.

The mural area at the south end of the wall includes about 408 square feet area and would cover the first three sections of the concrete wall. The stipend for the larger mural is $14,200.

The murals are part of planned improvements to Archibald Yell that were included in the bond issue approved by Fayetteville voters in 2019.
