A new event this weekend will raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention efforts.

The Out of the Darkness Walk will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 beginning at the Arkansas Union Courtyard on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

The local walk, one of several organized nationally, is co-organized by the Theta Chi fraternity on campus. The walk will raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, an organization whose mission is to “save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.”

Participants can start their own team for the walk, or join an existing team by registering at the walk website.

Walkers can wear “honor beads” to signify their personal connection to the cause, or in honor of a loved one during the walk. More information about the colored beads and what they signify is here.

To date, 13 teams made up of 194 participants have signed up to walk this weekend, raising nearly $10,000 for AFSP in the process.

In-person registration will begin outside the union at 1 p.m., and the opening ceremonies will start at 3 p.m.
