FLYER Q&A: OKC band stepmom to perform in Fayetteville with Modeling and Witchsister on March 16

Live music is returning to Fayetteville.

Ok, it’s been a slow comeback, but here we are in 2022 with some familiar problems – great bands coming through town on a weekday. Multiple shows on the same night. Shows three nights in a row. Can we stay up past 10 p.m. anymore? Can we even go out three nights in a row? These are 2019 questions and they’re back. And the answers are all yes, probably. Hopefully.

If you’re in search of a great show – there’s an excellent one coming soon on Wednesday, March 16 at George’s Majestic Lounge with OKC band stepmom playing with Fayetteville’s own Modeling and Witchsister.

Who: stepmom / Modeling / Witchsister
When: 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16
Where: George’s Majestic Lounge
Tickets: $10 at Stubs.net

stepmom are starting to explode regionally and this will be their first time in Fayetteville. One listen to their song “Damage Control” will hook you (video below). They pack an insane amount of sounds into their band. I recommend seeing them. This would make a great re-introduction to live shows in Fayetteville or it would be a great 15th show back.

I messaged Lindsey from stepmom out of the blue and she was nice enough to respond…

Hi Lindsey! How would you describe stepmom to a stranger?

stepmom is an all-female orchestral dream punk band! We pair cello and violin with fuzzy distorted guitar tones!

Let’s talk about your bandmates – Can you tell us about them and what they bring to the band?

Cheyenne sings harmonies while playing cello and bass, Danielle sings harmonies while playing keys and violin, Amie sings harmonies while playing drums, and I sing and play guitar! My bandmates are all bad-ass women that I’m constantly inspired by.

What visual art, book or show is inspiring you to write music right now?

Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel Oryx and Crake has been inspiring me lately, as well as Ty Segall’s “Emotional Mugger” music video and the “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” YouTube series.

How is the OKC music scene going? Any OKC bands we should be listening to?

The OKC music scene is thriving. We have new DIY and mid-size venues opening which is a great sign! Bands are finally getting back into the swing of things. I would definitely check out Audio Book Club, Keathley, Endocrine Twins, Poor Sap, Nia Moné, Lust, Mad Honey, Original Flow, and Swim Fan! There’s so many local bands putting out great music and there’s a big variety of genres!

Have you played Fayetteville before? Anything you’re looking forward to doing while you’re in town?

I have not played Fayetteville before, but Cheyenne (our bass/cello player) is from Fayetteville and has performed there many times! I’m excited to meet her friends that live in town!

You’re playing with two of Fayetteville’s best bands – Witchsister and Modeling. How did that lineup come together?

We saw that Modeling was playing OKC more often, and thought it would be fun to play with them in their hometown! Witchsister was recommended by a friend of Cheyenne’s.

What is stepmom planning for 2022? Any new releases in the works?

We released a new single on March 11 called “Your Elbows” which has more of an indie rock vibe! We’re working on a music video for that song, which will include muppet-style puppets that look like each band member! We’re also planning an LA tour in late July and an EP release in the fall!

What’s something that has been bringing you joy lately?

Playing live music always brings me a lot of joy. There’s no greater feeling when an audience is receptive to your music and you feel the energy being passed back and forth. We’re excited to share a moment of joy with Fayetteville!
