Members of the Active Transportation Advisory Committee meet on Oct. 12, 2022 at City Hall. (Fayetteville Government Channel)FAYETTEVILLE — Officials are looking to fill 26 positions on 14 of the city’s boards, commissions and committees.
The list of vacancies includes seats on the Black Heritage Preservation Commission, Environmental Action Committee, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and 11 more.
All volunteers must be registered voters who reside within the Fayetteville city limits. Those who are not Fayetteville registered voters will need to provide proof of residency. All applicants must submit a new application for each board, commission or committee.
The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28.
After the application period ends, the Nominating Committee will look over the applicants and schedule interviews with selected individuals. The committee will then make their recommendations to the City Council for final approval. Some board positions are nominated by the mayor, but the application process is the same.

Active Transportation Advisory Committee (4 openings)
Seats available:
– One unexpired Citizen-at-Large term ending 03/31/24
– Three Citizen-at-Large terms ending 12/31/24
Description:This committee reviews public comment, and advises city staff on the prioritization and land acquisition/easements for sidewalks and trails within Fayetteville. Members are also responsible for adopting sidewalk and trails master plans. Recommendations relating to trails are forwarded to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Recommendations relating to sidewalks are forwarded to the Transportation Division.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month in City Hall.
Airport Board (1 opening)
Seats available:

Description: The purpose of this board is to seek both general and technical citizen input and assistance in airport functions, provide and encourage visionary planning and strong leadership for the airport, and assist the City Council in matters pertaining to the operation, improvement, extension, and maintenance of the Airport and other related facilities, property and easements.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Fayetteville Executive Airport Conference Room.
Animal Services Advisory Board (3 openings)

Description: This board acts in an advisory capacity on policy matters of the Animal Services Division, and works to stimulate and encourage communication with the community.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the first Monday of the second month of each quarter at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
Audit Committee (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One Citizen-at-Large term ending 12/31/25
Description: The Audit Committee serves in an advisory capacity between the City Council, the city’s independent auditor, internal auditor, and management. The committee will review the city’s financial reports and internal controls regarding finance and accounting.
Meetings: The committee meets at least three times annually, or more frequently as circumstances dictate.
Black Heritage Preservation Commission (2 openings)
Seats available:
– Two Citizen-at-Large terms ending 12/31/25
Description: The Black Heritage Preservation Commission aims to recognize, acknowledge, protect and preserve historical Black structures and cemeteries in Fayetteville, and to create Black historical markers to recognize the struggles and achievements of the city’s Black citizens.
Meetings: The commission meets at least quarterly and may meet more often if desired by the commission. The chair of the commission may call a special meeting upon two days’ notice.
Community Development and Assistance Programs Advisory Board (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One unexpired Local Small Business Representative term ending 03/31/25
Description: This board aims to promote community involvement in the prioritization of community development initiatives; improve community awareness of the community development and public assistance programs provided by the city and advise the Community Resources Division and the City Council on the proposed use of Community Development Block Grant and other grant funds.
Meetings: Meetings are held monthly at City Hall.
Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals (1 opening)
Seats available:

Description: The purpose of this board is to hear and to act upon appeals regarding decisions made by the building inspector/superintendent. The board also hears appeals regarding construction materials to be used in new building construction and development. In addition, the board hears appeals regarding enforcement of the minimum housing standards for existing structures as specified in the standard building codes. Information regarding this board can also be found in the standard building code.
Meetings: The board does not meet on a regular basis, as the requests forwarded to this board are infrequent. Members are telephoned a week in advance of the meeting.
Energy Improvement District No. 1 (1 opening)
Seats available:

Description: Board members would oversee the district’s issuance of tax-exempt bonds and loaning of money to property owners using a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing. PACE is a creative financing mechanism that allows property owners to borrow money for weatherization, energy efficiency, renewable energy or water conservation improvements to their property. PACE enabling legislation was passed by the Arkansas Legislature in the 2013 session and signed by the Governor in April 2013.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every other month in City Hall.
Environmental Action Committee (1 opening)

Description: This committee works to address environmental concerns, to promote a safe and healthy environment, and to maintain the natural beauty of the environment within the city. It makes recommendations to other city committees and to the City Council.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in City Hall.
Housing Authority Board of Commissioners (2 openings)
Seats available:

– One Citizen-at-Large term ending 12/28/27
Description: The commissioners approve by-laws, resolutions, policies and procedures for administering housing programs for low income persons. The Housing Authority operates units of Public Housing and rental assistance in Fayetteville. Both programs are for low and very low income persons. All funds are provided through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Meetings: The board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month in City Hall.
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (3 openings)
Seats available:

Description: This board recommends priorities for capital improvements and means for financing the same, and prepares an annual progress report on parks and recreation activities.
Meetings: The board meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month in City Hall. In addition to the regularly scheduled board meetings, there are committee meetings that occur on a regular basis.
PEG Advisory Board (1 opening)

Description: This board advises the City Council on issues related to public access, educational, and government (PEG) television use in the City of Fayetteville.

Public Facilities Board (1 opening)

Description: The Public Facilities Board is authorized to issue revenue bonds to finance residential housing, health care, and related facilities to persons of low or moderate income and for the elderly.

Urban Forestry Advisory Board (4 openings)

Description: The purpose and intent of the committee is to advise the City Council on urban forestry and arboricultural related issues as an integral part of the city’s green infrastructure and to sit as the Wildland-Urban Interface: Firewise Advisory Board to advise the City Council on wildland and urban development related issues as an integral part of the city’s fire protection program and green infrastructure.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 4 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at City Hall.
