This Orientation follows Fayetteville City Council Resolution No. 41-09, in which there is to be an Orientation of New Aldermen for newly-elected individuals who will be sworn into office in 2011. This Orientation is to be held in December after each General Election or within one month after a Special Election in which a new alderman is elected. Rhonda Adams, Mark Kinion, and Justin Tennant were recently elected as Fayetteville City Council Members-Elect and will begin their terms in early January.

The New Aldermen Orientation will begin with a welcome by Mayor Lioneld Jordan at 9:00 a.m. Chief of Staff Don Marr will review the organizational structure of city government, City Clerk Sondra Smith will then review City Council Agenda Sessions, Council details, Committees, the City Clerk Role and Responsibilities, and the Freedom of Information Act. City Attorney Kit Williams will then review rights and duties of Aldermen; Resolutions and Ordinances; Council Rules, Procedures, and Processes; Initiating Resolutions and Ordinances; review reasons to approve or disapprove land use and development issues; zoning, and he will also review the Freedom of Information Act. Don Marr and Accounting Director Marsha Hertweck will provide a funding and budget process overview, and then select city staff members will introduce themselves and provide departmental overviews. Aldermen Bobby Ferrell, Brenda Thiel, Matthew Petty, and Adella Gray will be on a panel from 11:30 a.m. until noon and provide insights to the Aldermen-Elect. From 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., the Aldermen-Elect will be touring City Hall and city buildings in the vicinity of City Hall.

The terms of Aldermen Robert Rhoads, Shirley Lucas, and Kyle Cook will be ending in early January 2011. These Aldermen have been great assets to Fayetteville, and their work in making Fayetteville stronger is appreciated and honored. Council Member Adella Gray and her husband Gary will be hosting a reception in their honor immediately after the December 21st City Council meeting at their home. Other City Council members will be in attendance. Thank you Aldermen Rhoads, Lucas, and Cook for your dedicated years of service to Fayetteville!
