The third annual Hero Half Marathon is set for 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 9.

The event, which benefits local charities and non-profit organizations, includes a chip-timed half marathon, plus a competitive one-mile race and a one-mile fun run.

The scenic half marathon route begins at Lake Fayetteville and continues along the city’s trail system to the finish line at the Walton Arts Center in downtown Fayetteville.

The festival-like atmosphere includes music, food trucks, a beer garden, local vendors, sponsor booths, and activities for children.

Anyone can participate in the race, but a special invitation is made to fire departments across the country. Special prizes are given to the top male and female firefighters who run either the half marathon or one-mile race while wearing their full gear, including fire helmets and air tanks.

Registration is open through Friday, October 7th.
