Fayetteville movie goers can soon enjoy the IMAX experience without having to leave town.

Memphis-based Malco Theatres today announced it will open two IMAX theatres – one at the Razorback Cinema in Fayetteville and another at the Paradiso Cinema in Memphis.

The two IMAX theatres are scheduled to open on Dec. 15, just in time for the release of Walt Disney Studios’ Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

According to a news release, select sequences of Star Wars: The Last Jedi were shot using IMAX cameras. The sequences will expand to fill the entire screen with high image quality and will present more of the image on the IMAX screens than in standard theatres. The release states that the remainder of the film will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of the IMAX proprietary technology.

“We looked at all of our options regarding a large format solution and came to the conclusion that no one has a better combination of quality, full immersion cinema, and brand awareness than IMAX, said Stephen Lightman, Malco president and ceo, in the release. “We are excited to add The IMAX Experience to these two already great theatres.”

Malco officials have also said other planned upgrades to the Razorback Cinema will include reclined seating, alcohol sales, and an expanded kitchen that will offer “typical cinema grill fare.”
